Week #2

Fear of Not Mattering

  1. You are God’s idea.  What do the following verses tell you about your value in God’s eyes?

    1. Psalm 139:14-15

    2. Psalm 139:18

    3. Ephesians 2:10

    4. Mathew 10:29-31

  • Where do you draw the line between humility and viewing yourself as valueless?

  1. Which relationships, jobs, or journeys have caused you to wonder if you really do matter?

  2. Read Matthew 10:29-31.   “Are not two sparrows sold for a penny? Yet not one of them will fall to the ground outside your Father’s care. 30 And even the very hairs of your head are all numbered. 31 So don’t be afraid; you are worth more than many sparrows”.
  • Do you feel that God cares deeply for you as an individual?

  1. Have you ever experienced a time when you felt important by association?  Explain.

  2. Describe a time in which you’ve been hurt by feeling that you do not matter.

  3. Have you ever hurt another person by communicating to that individual that he or she was valueless?

  4. What are some things that culture teaches us to do in order to make ourselves significant?

  5. Read Luke 12:6. “Are not five sparrows sold for two pennies? Yet not one of them is forgotten by God”.  Describe a time when you felt like the 5th sparrow – indistinct, dispensable, disposable, worthless?  But what can you be certain of?

  • As you reflect on these emotions, do you feel motivated to help those fifth sparrows who need reminders of God’s deep love for them?

  1. Describe a time when fear of insignificance sabotaged your dreams.  What could you have done differently in that situation?

As you go about your week, by whose measuring stick are you living?  Pay attention – and journal what/who makes you feel insignificant and why.  Then, open your Bible and read what God says.
